How does this commercial demonstrate some advertising strategies?

  1. I think that most advertisers like to use comedy as a method to appeal to the public. They also use more touching and heart felt methods. These mthods grab peoples attention. in commercials and other ads, it is natural that if you see something that is funny, it grabs your attention. When there is more emotional commercial it connects with people on a personal level, and they may feel more inclined to purchase the product. In my opinion I think that both of these methods are extremely productive. Speaking from personal experience, I have found myself in a store contemplating what brand I should get, and recalling a commercial even though that may sound silly, it does make an impact.

  2. Advertisements are everywhere you really can’t avoid them. In order to watch most music videos on youtube you must first watch a 30 second advertisement. Youtube isn’t the only place that advertisements are seen. They are shown before previews at movie theaters and even during educational programs. In my opinion advertisers favorite ways to promote products is by using celebrities. If a person sees a celebrity using a product as opposed to some paid commercial actor that they’ve never seen the person is more than likely more persuaded to want to purchase that product. In addition advertisers use comedy as a way to help make their product seem more appealing. During class this week we viewed a commercial for the popular snack food Combo’s. In this advertisement they had a male play the role as a mother which made it funny to watch. This trick could make a consumer associate combo’s as a food that will put them into a feel good mood and I find connecting with a viewer in an emotional way is a great way to advertise.

  3. I agree with you Lauren, that we are intrigued when a celebrity pops up in a 30 second ad. However, some actors on the rise can get a huge boost from commercials and become known as the spokesperson. The T-mobile ads have transformed the actress into a familiar face, as have the old Subway ads, along with the All State Mayhem series. So while I think advertisers strive to create familiarity, they also attempt to create a whole know form of familiarity - one to look forward to, where we will wonder what the next Mayhem ad will be.
Considering what you said about the youtube ads, I think most people get bothered by them. Personally, I use that time to quickly check another website, or go and get something to drink because the ads are so repetitive I just don't care for them at all. Many ads online have also begun using a "skip ad" button, which is probably utilized extremely often.
Do you think advertisements on T.V. or the Internet are more effective?

    1. Laura, I defiantly think that advertisements aired on television are more effective. I say this because most advertisements that appear on the internet are on the sides of websites or on the bottom where peoples eyes aren't really focused. As opposed to sitting on the coach and watching a brand new episode of a T.V show that you haven't recorded yet, you really can't avoid watching the commercials. Also the advertisements aired on television are most times more entertaining to watch than an annoying advertisement that pops up on the yahoo homepage.

  4. Advertisers use many different ways to promote their products. In order to make their profit, they must use the right methods to make their sales. For example, in a food commercial the advertisers not going to put anybody fat in their commercial! They’ll have somebody who’s young and energetic instead. They’re going to use words like “all natural” in the ad if they want to prove to consumers that it’s healthy. They want to make the food product seem delicious but healthy at the same time. Another way that they promote their products is by making you feel like you need it. They show realistic situations where their product will come in handy. Maybe it’s the new vacuum on the market; an advertiser would probably show a crumby mess that a child left. Finally, another method that advertisers use is one that makes you feel like you’ll be left out if you don’t have it. It may show people having a great time with the product, or it could show many younger people with it in the advertisement like it’s the cool thing to have (if that’s their target age for the product being sold). All in all, advertisers have many different methods they use to promote their products that many consumers may or may not be aware of.
