Thoughts on the 9/11 documentary?

  1. I think that because we were all so young when 9/11 actually happened, for most of us, or at least for me it never really resonated as to how scary it actually was. But, I think that what the documentary really conveyed well was the personal impact rather than the political. Especially because of the way the film was shot. What I mean is that for me, seeing a plane hit a building with a common video camera made it way more real than any high resolution movie camera could.
Another part that I had never thought of before was what it was like on the actual plane. I think that when you think of the actual plane, you think more of the pilot and who HE was and what HIS goals were, not what all the innocent passengers were seeing and feeling. So when the parents of one of the victims was talking about the phone call he had with his son as he realized what his future held, when he was describing the scene on the plane it made me feel kind of sick. To hear someone relay information forced me to imagine the environment of that plane and what it would have been like to be on it, and it was awful.

    1. I agree that the documentary did a great job of conveying the personal impact of the event rather than the political impact. Hearing the stories of the victims, heroes, and individuals that witnessed the event or lossed a loved one was very sad. After the attack occurred it seemed like the T.V., newspapers, and internet was more focused on the politics of the event instead of the personal impact it had on U.S. citizens. The documentary also made me think about what it would be like to be an innocent passenger on one of the high jacked planes; I can't imagine what that would be like.

  2. The 9/11 documentary was extrememly emotional. I felt as if America as a country didnt react fast enough, which resulted in thousands of deaths. not to be confused with me blaming the tragedy on america, but I felt we were not properly prepared for such an enormous emergency as such.
I was extremely moved, when listening to stories of the victims and their families of 9/11. I thought of how I would have reacted in the situation and all I could come up with was just constantly cry and think of all the things and people I would ne missing out on. I couldnt bear calling people to say my final goodbyes. I wouldnt know what to say. What would you guys do?

  3. i believe hearing the stories of each individual affected by 9/11 forces the viewers to understand the tragedies on a more personal level. Whether it be making us feel the suspence in every second as we're on the phone with our loved ones awaiting impact, or having to helpessly sit while you hear your son or daughters last words before their death.

  4. and i agree with you laura on the real vs movie perspective. knowing that real people were falling from the buildings and practically seeing them die made it feel wrong to even look at. those were people who truly took a leap of faith and were forced to choose what to them seemed a less painful death.

and renee i dont know what id do, probably pray. its uncomfortable even trying to imagine myself in that situation.

  6. The 9/11 documentary was an eye opening reminder of the tragic event that took place on September 11, 2001. Viewing the presented material stirred up feelings of sorrow, shock, and disbelief in my mind. The live footage of the attack shown in the documentary was very upsetting and gave me a sense of what it must have been like to be a bystander. The featured individuals who shared their stories expressed feelings of sadness, loss, and shock that I could empathize with. U.S. citizens wanted answers to why an attack like this occurred, and they also wanted justice. I without doubt understand why there was such a strong demand for answers and justice after such an unexpected attack that took many innocent lives. On September 11, 2001 I was only six years old and didn’t understand the impact of what had happened that day, but as I got older I learned more about the tragedy that occurred and how it changed America. Every American, rather they loss someone or not, was affected by 9/11.

  7. The 9/11 documentary that we viewed yesterday during class was very eye opening and at times hard to watch. Seeing people’s facial expressions right when the plane flew into the first tower was sad to watch and if I were to see it happen my reaction probably would've been very similar. I would be scarred and I would never want to fly on an airplane ever again. In fact one of my family friends wasn’t even on one of the flights on 9/11 but to this day refuses to travel places on an airplane. Also for the family members who spoke that lost a loved one I couldn't even imagine being in their shoes, that because of one persons actions so many people died and the effects that it left on their family members. I think it’s important for students starting in elementary to college to talk about 9/11 on the anniversary every year to reflect on a bad time in our nation’s history and to come up with solutions to make America safer.
